Paired breathing — try slow, deep breathing in rhythm with your cat’s purr cycle; this synchronises your respiratory rate with the calming stimulus

Log it — note in your symptom diary when you’ve had cat time; over weeks, you may see a pattern between those sessions and reduced spasm frequency

Not just for SPS: why cats are good for everyone

The benefits described in this article aren’t reserved for people managing a neurological condition. The same physiological pathways that make cats valuable for SPS — reduced cortisol, parasympathetic activation, oxytocin release — operate in every human nervous system. Your psychologist doesn’t need you to have a diagnosis to recommend a purring cat.

Modern life keeps most of us in a low-grade state of sympathetic activation — the same “fight or flight” mode that is so damaging in SPS, just at a lower volume. Chronic background stress raises cortisol, disrupts sleep, suppresses immunity, and strains the cardiovascular system. Research consistently links elevated stress with increased risk of anxiety, depression, hypertension, and heart disease.

Cat interaction interrupts that cycle. Studies measuring cortisol and heart rate variability in cat owners during routine time with their pets found meaningful reductions in stress markers after just ten minutes of interaction. These effects don’t require a clinical setting, a prescription, or even a particularly cooperative cat. They happen quietly, in the course of ordinary life.

A 20-year follow-up study of over 4,000 adults found that cat ownership was associated with a significantly reduced risk of dying from heart attack and cardiovascular disease — independent of other known risk factors including age, blood pressure, cholesterol, and smoking. A separate meta-analysis found that cat owners had a roughly 21% lower risk of cardiovascular mortality compared to non-owners.

The leading theory for why is familiar: the stress-relieving effect of animal companionship reduces sympathetic nervous system activity, which in turn lowers blood pressure, heart rate, and inflammatory load over time. The cat doesn’t know it’s protecting your heart. It’s just sitting with you.

Beyond the physiological, cats support mental wellbeing in ways that are harder to measure but just as real. The daily structure of caring for an animal — feeding, play, attention — provides gentle routine and a sense of purpose. For people living alone, those managing anxiety or depression, or anyone going through a difficult season of life, that quiet rhythm can be genuinely stabilising.

A cat also offers something that human relationships, however warm, cannot always provide: non-judgmental presence. No advice. No performance required. Just companionship at whatever pace the day demands. For anyone carrying the weight of stress, grief, or simply the relentless pace of modern life, that is not nothing. That is medicine.

Everyday practices — for any cat owner

You don’t need a wellness protocol to benefit from your cat. But being a little more intentional about the time you already share can deepen the effect:

Put the phone down — when your cat settles near you, resist the pull of the screen. A few minutes of genuine presence with your cat is a different experience from half-watching it while scrolling

Use the purr deliberately — when you’re feeling wound up or anxious, seek out your cat rather than waiting for the feeling to pass on its own. Let the sound and warmth do their work consciously
